Man, sometimes I feel like they’re just setting us up to fail. Sometimes I feel like they’re giving us tests and stuff, and they know we can’t do it, they write it and know we can’t do it. It’s not even written for us.

one of my students, a young black male, while I was explaining to him how the state is shifting to the Common Core Standards and what that means for changes in the school curriculum. We’d been talking last week about biases in standardized testing, especially in language used.

He also made an amazing point about shifting to Common Core: what if the stress and added assessment pushes more kids to drop out, and especially kids of color? I told him I hadn’t thought about that, and since we were in math tutoring, I promised to keep track of those numbers and see.
